Kallithea, Zakynthos

Kallithea (Greek: Καλλιθέα), is a Greek village and a community in the municipal unit of Alykes in the island of Zakynthos. Kallithea's 2001 population was 216 people. Its elevation is 60 m and it is situated in a valley, the hills are to the east and the Vrachionas mountains are due west.

Location and transportation

Kallithea is located about 14 km WNW of Zakynthos and SSE of Volimes. The village has about 3 to 4 km of paved road, 3 to 4 km of gravel road and has about 2 to 3 km of hydro and phone lines.

Geography

Most of the area are made up of farmlands and features some forests, most of the forests are in the edge portions and grasslands in the mountainous part.

History

After World War II and the Greek Civil War and the 1953 quake, its buildings were rebuilt and emigration occurred at a higher rate until the 1970s, the settlement recovered a small part of the population between 1991 and 2001. In 1997, the ex-community (now a village and a municipal district) joined to become the newly formed municipality of Alykes.

Science

Zakynthos is a beautiful and green island in the Ionian Sea but the freshwater resources are limited. Therefore is a Greek-Norwegian educational collaboration being established on the island: The Science Park Zakynthos is collaboration between Technological Educational Institute of Ionian Islands (TEI), The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) and the Therianos Villas and Therianos Family Farm on Zakynthos.

Other

There is an elementary school, a church and a square. The nearest high school is in Katastari. Its economy is based mainly on agricultural products.
